The metal backup in the safe
The seed phrase is engraved on fireproof steel, tucked away so well that no one but you knows the safe holds anything important. After you're gone, it just stays shut.
With bitcoin and other self-custody assets, there's no password reset, no support hotline, no probate certificate that helps. If nobody knows the seed phrase, the funds are gone for good. Erbnis makes sure the right person gets it when it matters — and no one gets it a moment before.
None of them require a hack. It's enough that nobody finds out in time where the keys are.

Out of caution, the phrase ends up in the will anyway. That document gets read by the probate court and can be seen by several people during the process — including some who were never meant to inherit anything.
A Ledger or Trezor sits in a drawer. Nobody knows it exists, what the PIN is, or roughly how much it holds. The device quietly becomes the most valuable undiscovered object in the house.
Everything around your crypto plan — kept cleanly separate from anything visible while you're alive.
An overview of your wallets and exchanges
Which exchange, which hardware wallet, which software wallet — without exposing the secret keys themselves.
Where the seed phrase physically lives
A pointer to the location (safe deposit box, home safe, steel plate), not the words themselves — those stay separately secured.
Login details for custodial exchanges
For accounts at Kraken, Coinbase or similar, so heirs can start the official support process, much like with a bank.
Instructions for multisig or Shamir shares
Who holds which share and how many need to come together before a wallet can be restored.
Context for your trusted person
A short explanation of what exists and roughly at what scale — so nobody has to search without knowing what for.
A will is a legal document, not a vault. It's held by the probate court and becomes readable during the inheritance process — by heirs, sometimes by other parties too. Writing a seed phrase into it means potentially exposing it long before anyone is legally entitled to use it. Erbnis doesn't replace a will (in Germany, § 2247 BGB still requires a handwritten or notarial will) — but it is the right place for anything that needs to stay secret until it's actually needed.
The real problem with crypto succession planning is trust: who do you hand something to that becomes instantly usable the moment it's in their hands? Erbnis doesn't solve that with a promise, it solves it with structure. Nothing is released while you keep checking in. Only after a defined period with no sign of life, and after further verification, does anything reach the person you named — time-delayed, conditional, never on demand.
Metal backup in a safe
Resistant to fire and water, but a one-person secret. If you die without anyone knowing what the safe holds, the whole effort was wasted.
Shamir split among relatives
Spreads the risk across several people, but demands coordination: every share has to stay findable, and everyone involved needs to know how to bring them together.
Multisig wallet
Technically elegant, but demanding: a co-signer needs real technical understanding and has to stay reachable indefinitely.
Where does Erbnis stand honestly on this? We encrypt your data at rest — it's never stored as plain text on our servers. A zero-knowledge approach, where even Erbnis couldn't technically read your content, is not part of the product. For many people, combining time-delayed release with encryption is already a huge step up from having no plan at all — for very large holdings, an additional split like Shamir or multisig can still be worthwhile.
„I ran through in my head who I'd hand the seed phrase to, and realised I didn't want to give anyone instant, usable control over my entire savings while I'm still alive.“
